On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 25th, 2001, thirty-year-old father of two Richie Clayton was working out at a gym in Aigburth, a suburb of Liverpool, England. He evidently left the gym for a time after his workout, but then returned a couple of hours later. Witnesses spotted him talking on his phone outside the gym at around eight p.m.
Suddenly, a green Ford Mondeo pulled up to the curb, and a masked man got out; a second masked man was also in the vehicle. Richie ran from them, and the two men began pursuing and firing a gun at him.
Richie was hit, and tried desperately to get into a nearby house for help, but was unsuccessful. He reportedly then went to another house before circling around to the first house again, at which point he fell to the ground and died. An occupant of the first house who attempted to help him was also shot in the leg, but survived.
The two masked men jumped back into their car and drove along Belgrave Road and then onto Buckland Street. The green Mondeo was later found, a burned husk, in a cul-de-sac nearby. Police speculated that the two assailants had most likely taken off on foot after burning the car, and vanished into Priory Woods.
A renewed push to solve the case was launched in 2016, on the fifteenth anniversary of the crime, but thus far, no new developments have been reported.
