On January 16th of 2002, forty-four-year-old Dennis Matlock was found dead in his home by friend and neighbor John Hood, in the small town of Reklaw, Texas. According to the medical examiner, he had died from blunt force trauma to the head and multiple stab wounds. The weapon that caused the head injury has not been determined.
Because the home had been ransacked, police speculated that the murder had perhaps taken place during the course of a robbery, but the motive still remains in question.
Dennis had lived in the area for many years, as did his mother and several other relatives, though he had only lived in the house where he was found for about a year. He lived alone, and according to friends, largely kept to himself.
In 2017, The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers made a renewed push in the media to solve the crime, offering an increased cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.
