On March 13th of 2002, a park ranger came across several bags on a moor on Winsford Hill near Somerset. Though the bags emitted a somewhat foul odor, the park ranger assumed they contained animal remains, and didn’t open them, instead arranging for them to be taken to a nearby kennel, where they were going to be deposited in the facility’s incinerator.
The bags sat there for several days before someone opted to look inside, and when they did, they were horrified to discover the dismembered remains of a human being.
The victim was male, probably in his twenties or thirties, and had likely died violently sometime between late 1999 or early 2000, though it was believed that his body wasn’t deposited where it was found until much later, possibly in May of 2001.
The man wore a gold pendant adorned with a verse from the Quran, leading authorities to assume that he was Muslim. The unknown victim was therefore laid to rest in Watchet following an Islamic funeral.
In 2017, a full DNA profile of the murdered man was established, but as of this writing, neither victim nor killer has been identified, and the case is generally known only as the Exmoor Body Mystery.
