Thirty-six-year-old Tonya Darden was last seen alive on January 10th, 2002, near the intersection of Lockbourne and Smith in Franklin County, Ohio. Two days later, her nude and strangled body was discovered near a cemetery in a rural area off lonely Rowe Road. Tonya had once worked for the Columbus Urban League after she graduated from high school, but subsequently fell into drug addiction and prostitution.
Interestingly, more than five years later, another dead woman turned up less than a mile away from where Tonya Darden was found; this victim was forty-year-old Alissa Clere, who had also tragically spiraled into drug use and sex work. Like Tonya, Alissa was found nude, but unlike Tonya, Alissa had her throat cut and her body set on fire post mortem. Her remains were discovered on April 18th of 2007.
Law enforcement are not certain if the two crimes are related, but are keeping the possibility open.
