Arthur “Buddy” Schumacher

Arthur “Buddy” Schumacher

In 1925, Arthur Schumacher, better known as Buddy, was eight years old and lived with his parents and older sister in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

At around nine o’clock on the morning of July 25th, Buddy and three other boys from the neighborhood hopped a freight train to ride to a local swimming hole they frequented. Shortly after jumping off the train, however, Buddy separated from his friends and subsequently disappeared.

For nearly two months, police and concerned townspeople scoured the area for him, but found no trace. Then, on or around September 12th, 1925, Buddy’s remains were discovered about a mile from his house. His clothing was torn, and he had been suffocated with a handkerchief shoved down his throat.

In 2012, former Wauwatosa resident Paul J. Hoffman wrote a book about the case called Murder in Wauwatosa: The Mysterious Death of Buddy Schumacher, but as of this writing, the crime is still unsolved.
