Twenty-four-year-old Wendy Gallagher, described as a “lovely” young woman by her friends and family, lived alone in a flat on Princess Street. On Friday, January 18th, 1991, she was spotted in the town center of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was the last time she was seen alive.
A few days later, her loved ones realized they hadn’t heard from her. When authorities checked the young woman’s house, they found her dead inside; she had been strangled with an electrical cord.
Since the victim seemingly had no enemies and there didn’t appear to be any particular motive for the crime, police were stymied from the very beginning of the investigation, and it doesn’t even appear that there were any strong suspects.
The case went cold quickly, and stayed that way for decades. In 2021, a renewed appeal was made for information, and detectives told the media that they hoped new forensic techniques might help them finally put the case to bed.
As of this writing in early 2024, however, it seems the new focus on the case didn’t yield any results, and though the investigation is still open, there have been no new developments.
