The Baby on the Beach

On October 15th, 1981, three men were using metal detectors near the pier bandstand on Weymouth Beach in Dorset, England when they stumbled upon a white carrier bag with Bath Street Wine Cellar, Quality Wine Merchant, Jersey CI printed on it. Inside the bag was the body of a baby girl who was only a few days old. She had been strangled to death.

Authorities were uncertain where the body had come from but speculated that the baby may have been thrown overboard from the ferry between Weymouth and the Channel Islands.

Known as The Baby on the Beach case, the investigation was hindered by a tragic lack of leads in the decades following the discovery of the body. Finally, in 2009, a man came forward who seemed to have some relevant information, but what this information was has never been made public.

Additionally, a full genetic profile of the individual most likely to be the baby’s mother was produced that same year, but the profile didn’t match anyone already in Britain’s DNA database.

There have been no updates on the case since 2009, but police still urge anyone with information about the murder to come forward and help identify both the victim and her killer.
