Sixty-three-year-old retired veteran William Howe lived alone in a first-floor flat on Victoria Road, Worthing, West Sussex, England. On Monday, January 8th, 1990, police were summoned to his residence, at which point they found the man dead, lying face down on the floor with his arms and legs tightly bound with electrical cords.
William Howe had obviously been tortured before his death, beaten severely with fists and what appeared to be a hammer. His killer or killers had also stomped on his back repeatedly, fracturing his ribs.
Because the flat was ransacked, authorities surmised that the attackers had been trying to force information out of William Howe about a safe he supposedly owned which contained a significant sum of money and some expensive jewelry. The killers failed to find the safe, however, and then tore the flat apart looking for it before finally fleeing, likely covered in blood.
A few unidentified fingerprints were discovered in the flat, but none were matched to any suspects, and although police searched diligently for the culprits, no arrests were ever made. The savage murder of William Howe remains unsolved as of 2024.
