Thirty-three-year-old mother of one Julie Dorsett made her living as a sex worker in Hackney, London, England. She had a fifty-four-year-old partner named Sinclair Lewis, who was rumored to be abusive.
In October of 2002, Julie was reported missing, but for nearly six years afterward, her fate was unknown. Then, in August of 2008, her partial remains were discovered buried at the Low Farm Allotments on Bridge Road. Her cause of death could not be determined, but it was surmised that she had been buried there since shortly after her disappearance in late 2002.
From the outset, authorities suspected Sinclair Lewis of killing her and even sent an undercover officer to befriend and eventually move in with the suspect, in the hopes of getting him to confess to the crime on tape. The months-long operation never resulted in any actionable evidence, however, as Lewis never said or did anything that would incriminate him.
Authorities believed that Lewis’s alleged history of violence toward Julie and the fact that he had once owned the allotment where her body was found and used it to grow cannabis made them certain that he was the culprit.
Lewis was tried for manslaughter two separate times at the Old Bailey but was found not guilty in both trials, leaving the murder of Julie Dorsett officially unsolved. A large reward is still on offer for any information leading to the conviction of her killer.
