Seventeen-year-old Brenda Evans lived in Poulton, Cheshire, England, and had a job at the local post office and general store. Every day on her lunch break, she would walk the half-mile to her aunt and uncle’s house, have lunch with them, and then return to work.
However, on the afternoon of October 7th, 1977, Brenda didn’t return from lunch, and her supervisor became concerned. Later on, Brenda’s mother came to the post office herself and was alarmed to find Brenda not there. At that point, she organized family and friends to fan out and look for the teenager.
Not long after the search began, Edith Pritchard, the mother of Brenda’s fiancé, discovered Brenda’s lifeless body. Someone had strangled the girl with her own tights and then dumped her down a twelve-foot manhole.
The site where Brenda’s body was found lay only about five hundred yards from where her fiancé John Pritchard was cutting hedges; hence he became a promising early suspect. Though he was questioned for twenty-seven hours straight and kept in police custody for several weeks, he was ultimately never charged with any crime.
The identity of the person who killed Brenda Evans, therefore, remains a mystery.

The Butler did it.
