Forty-four-year-old Susan Donoghue was originally from Ireland but moved to Bristol, England, where she worked as a nurse at Brentry Hospital. She had one child.
On the night of August 5th, 1976, someone broke into her Sneyd Park flat while she was sleeping, beat her over the head with a truncheon, and sexually assaulted her before battering her to death. Susan’s fiancé returned home a few hours later to find her dead.
A footprint found on the windowsill of the room adjacent to Susan’s bedroom suggested this was the point of entry into the home. The killer had also left a pair of gloves, a tin of tobacco, and the murder weapon behind at the scene.
Later investigation also turned up a silver bracelet thought to belong to Susan, discovered in the garden of a Stoke Hill residence.
In 2016, authorities announced that they had a full DNA profile of the perpetrator, and had every confidence that the decades-old murder could still be solved.
Since then, though, tragically, there have been no new updates.
