Twenty-five-year-old Joseph Cummins lived with his grandmother in a house in Fazakerley, a suburb of north Liverpool, Merseyside, England. At around nine p.m. on the night of January 20th, 2011, Joseph was getting into a car driven by his friend. Suddenly, an unknown person crept up from behind, using the unusually thick fog as a shield, and shot Joseph three times in the back.
The victim survived the initial onslaught, staggering to a nearby shop on Longmoor Lane. Police found him there and transported him to the hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
Five men were taken into custody at various points in connection with the crime, but all were eventually released. One of these men had been caught on a CCTV camera walking past Fazakerley Car Sales, where Joseph collapsed after being shot. This individual was also released without charge.
Because of the foggy weather conditions on that night making identification difficult, authorities and the media dubbed the crime “the murder in the mist.” There is a £20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the killer, but as of this writing in April of 2024, the slaying remains unsolved.
