Thirty-four-year-old Sarah Melia was a mother of two and worked at a launderette near her home in Horwich, Lancashire, England. According to her mother Marian, she was a kind-hearted woman and a wonderful mother to her children, Meghan and Ethan.
On January 14th, 2008, Sarah’s teenage daughter came home to find her mother dead at the bottom of the stairs. She had been stabbed multiple times in the back and also had several shallower stab wounds in her chest, as well as damage to her ribs. The knife used to kill her was quickly found on the roof of an extension near her home.
Police investigation first led to Sarah’s brother, Mark Kitchen, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. He was placed on trial for the murder on two separate occasions, but in 2009 a jury found him not guilty. He ceased any further contact with his family at that point.
Since Mark Kitchen’s acquittal, there have been no significant suspects in the crime, despite it being featured on Crimewatch. The case remains open and unsolved.
