Lindsey Scholes

Lindsey Scholes

Seventeen-year-old Lindsey Scholes was staying with friends at a house on Milgate Street, Royston, South Yorkshire, England on the night of September 8th, 2001. The house was only a five-minute walk from her own residence, where she lived with her mother and younger brother Shaun.

At some point during the night, an unknown perpetrator or perpetrators poured some type of white spirit through the letter slot of the house on Milgate Street and then set the alcohol alight. From later evidence, it appeared that Lindsey was awakened by the smoke and attempted to run into the bathroom, but collapsed. The other occupants of the house were able to escape unharmed.

When firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze, they found Lindsey face down in the tiny bathroom, still alive but burned over nearly twenty percent of her body. She was rushed to the hospital, and her mother soon arrived to sit at her side.

Lindsey held on for two days, but the burns and the smoke inhalation proved too much, and she eventually died of her injuries.

During the course of the investigation, police questioned six different suspects, but none was ever formally charged.

A new plea for information was made in early 2021, and the case is still open, but as of May 2024, the identity of the person or persons who deliberately set the fire that killed Lindsey Scholes remains unknown.
