Emma Winnall

Ninety-three-year-old Emma Winnall was a beloved mother of five and lived alone in a house on Pensby Close in Moseley, Birmingham, England.

On the evening of April 30th, 2012, the elderly woman was put to bed as usual by her caretaker, who then left the house, locking the door behind her.

The following morning, the same caretaker returned at eight-thirty a.m., and immediately heard Emma screaming from her bedroom.

When the caretaker entered the room, she saw that Emma was covered in blood, and later examination demonstrated that her attacker had fractured her skull, broken her arm, and partially severed her finger.

There was no sign of forced entry, and police speculated that the assailant had entered the home using a key. Though there was ample blood spatter around the bed, there didn’t seem to be any blood anywhere else in the house, suggesting the perpetrator had not lingered at or searched the residence. It was unclear how long Emma had lay there in her bed screaming for help before her caretaker arrived.

Though Emma survived the initial assault, she languished in the hospital for nearly a month, and finally died of her injuries on May 29th.

Not long after the incident, two people—a fifty-six-year-old woman and a twenty-eight-year-old man—were arrested in connection with the crime, but neither was charged with any wrongdoing and both were released.

Authorities have admitted that they have no suspects in the case, but still hope that the shocking crime will eventually be solved.
