Sixty-eight-year-old Barry Rubery was a well-loved member of his community, a retired civil engineer who lived in Iron Acton, South Gloucestershire, England. He owned a large parcel of land that contained storage units he would rent out to other residents.
On the night of April 28th, 2010, Barry attended a dinner at his local Masonic lodge and got a ride home from a friend at about ten-forty-five p.m. As he was approaching his house on foot after being dropped off, he was attacked by an unknown individual or individuals.
The perpetrators dragged him into the front room of his home, restrained him with wire and electrical cord, then proceeded to beat him to death. Barry put up a fierce struggle but was no match for the killers.
His neighbor found his body the following day, lying face down in a pool of blood. Authorities were able to determine that Barry had been robbed of a gold pocket watch, a Nokia 3310 cell phone, a set of keys, and an old Makita drill. Since the items were not excessively valuable and the attack so brutal, police were left wondering if there was some other motive for the murder. So far, they have not been able to find one.
In September 2014, there was a seeming breakthrough in the case when two men, aged thirty and nineteen, were arrested in connection with the crime. Both men were later released without charge, however, and since then there has been no further progress in the investigation.
