Forty-two-year-old Barry Bailey lived in Walton, Liverpool, England with his wife and two sons. He worked as a taxi driver.
In the early hours of November 15th, 1994, Barry had just returned home from work and was getting out of his Austin Montego when he was suddenly set upon by three or four men, who poured gasoline over him and set him on fire before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze, taking Barry to the nearest hospital with eighty percent of his body horribly burned. He was then transferred to a specialist burn center, where he underwent a five-hour surgery. Though he was given fifty-fifty odds of survival, he eventually succumbed to his injuries, dying on November 21st.
Police were able to determine that the gasoline used to kill Barry Bailey had been purchased at approximately two a.m. from an all-night garage next to the Black Bull pub in Walton.
According to neighbors, someone had pulled up to the Bailey house in a car and smashed the windows of Barry’s taxi on November 14th. This information led authorities to wonder if Barry had been the target of some kind of vendetta. What the possible motive could have been for targeting him, however, they were unable to determine, as Barry had no history of involvement in anything shady whatsoever.
Four men, including three brothers, were arrested in connection with the murder and questioned extensively, but all were released without charge. Since then, there have been no new developments in the case, and the brutal slaying of Barry Bailey is still unsolved.
