Enrico Sidoli

Fifteen-year-old Enrico Sidoli lived with his loving Italian family in Hampstead, London, and was described as a gentle, musically gifted young man who was often bullied by neighbor boys.

On July 8th, 1976, Enrico was swimming at a crowded public outdoor pool on Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath. Later estimates placed the number of other people in and around the pool that day at around one thousand, which makes what ultimately happened to Enrico even more baffling and tragic.

At some point, it seems that Enrico was involved in an altercation with three other boys at the pool, and they began beating him and holding him under the water. Either because of the chaotic throngs of swimmers or because people simply didn’t want to get involved, no one appears to have seen exactly what happened.

Soon enough, lifeguards ordered everyone out of the water and jumped in to pull Enrico out. Two off-duty nurses happened to be at the facility and helped to resuscitate him, after which he was taken to the Royal Free Hospital. Sadly, however, the brain damage he had suffered from the ordeal was too severe, and he died eleven days later, on July 19th.

Authorities were frustrated by the fact that although there had been hundreds of potential witnesses to the crime, no one had evidently seen anything useful. A photograph was taken at the side of the pool as the nurses were working on Enrico, and this picture captured a young man with dark hair swimming away from the side of the pool where Enrico lay. This man may have been a witness or one of the perpetrators, but the individual has never come forward and has not been identified, though police believe his first name might be Tony.

Two individuals were interviewed under caution regarding the crime: one a sixteen-year-old boy in September of 1976, and one a twenty-five-year-old man in August 1986. Neither was charged.

In 2017, a renewed plea was made in the media, at which time a £40,000 reward was offered for information leading to the conviction of the assailants. As of this writing in September 2024, though, the shocking public murder of Enrico Sidoli is still unsolved.

  1. Enrico Sidoli was mentioned in a song called The Law According To Dr Kippah by Madness on their 2023 album Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie.

Hampstead was part of the pre Madness manor of several of the band in the 70s.

If I get a chance I will ask the lyricist why he chose to reference Enrico.
