John Lennon

Forty-one-year-old John Lennon, who obviously shared his name with the famous Beatle, worked as a paint sprayer and was originally from Ireland. In the late 1980s, he seemed somewhat adrift in life, not really having a permanent address and usually seen wandering around Forest Gate in East London, England. He was also known to be an alcoholic.

On the night of February 19th, 1988, John had been drinking with his girlfriend at the Upton Manor pub on Plashet Road in Plaistow. After he left, though, he was set upon by assailant or assailants unknown.

In the wee hours of February 20th, John was found dead in the street, his pockets turned out, the victim of a vicious assault. The cause of death was determined to be a massive brain hemorrhage caused by a torn neck artery.

Five months later, a man was arrested on suspicion of the crime. Police alleged that while this individual was on remand at Bristol police station, he had not only confessed to killing John Lennon but had actually bragged about it. When questioned directly, however, he claimed he was innocent, insisting he’d been at home watching TV at the time of the murder. As there was no evidence linking him to the slaying, he was eventually released.

As of this writing in September 2024, the murder of John Lennon is still unsolved.
