Thirty-one-year-old Nigel Bostock owned a shoe store in Southport, Lancashire, England, and lived alone in a detached bungalow on Abrams Fold in Banks. On the night of Friday, December 19th, 1986, it was believed that he hosted a small Christmas party at his home, with at least three guests present.
The following day, Nigel was found dead in the bathroom of his house. He was lying half in and half out of the partially-filled bathtub, and had been strangled with a complicated ligature. He had also been stabbed. The residence bore no other signs of a struggle.
Police later discovered that a sum of money between £600 and £700 was likely stolen from the victim’s briefcase, as was a Bulova Accutron wristwatch that Nigel often wore.
Though it was determined that Nigel had frequented gay clubs in the area, it was unknown whether this was relevant to his murder.
Years after the crime, in 2003, an anonymous letter was sent to authorities with details of the homicide, but the writer of the letter was never able to be traced. Likewise, the three people thought to be at Nigel’s home for the party on the night he died have never been found.
In 2005, a man was arrested in connection with the murder after he refused to give police a sample of his DNA. This individual, however, was eventually released without charge.
Since that time, the case has gone cold, and remains unsolved as of October 2024.
