Twenty-seven-year-old Marina Monte lived in London with her boyfriend. Both were heroin addicts, and Marina supported her habit through prostitution.
At around ten-thirty p.m. on January 24th, 1987, she was spotted trawling the Bayswater, Queensway, and Paddington areas for business. These sightings, however, were the last of her alive.
Shortly after seven a.m. the following morning, a railroad worker discovered her body near the Mitre Bridge railway junction. She had been strangled, and her boots and purse were missing.
Later investigation has possibly linked her murder to that of Rachel Applethwaite, another sex worker in the same area who was murdered the following day by strangulation, and also had her shoes stolen.
Less than two months later, a Mexican diplomat was questioned in connection with both murders but pleaded innocence. There was no solid evidence to hold him, and he was released.
The murder of Marina Monte is still unsolved as of October 2024.
