Seventy-six-year-old Karoly “Charlie” Varga was originally from Hungary but had moved to England in the 1950s. In 2011, he lived in a house on Cannon Street in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. According to his family, he was an exceedingly kind man who was no threat to anyone.
On July 30th, 2011, Karoly was found dead in his home, having been beaten about the head with a small, axe-like weapon. A post-mortem suggested that he’d been murdered about three days before.
Police studied CCTV footage from the time of the crime, and spotted Karoly letting a man who they presumed was the killer into his house. This individual was wearing Lonsdale sneakers and had later exited the residence through the back gate onto Bell Street. In the video, the man is seen carrying what is assumed to be the murder weapon, but this implement has never been found.
In the summer of 2012, a forty-seven-year-old man named Elemer Patakfalvi was arrested and charged with Karoly’s slaying, but his case was subsequently dropped due to insufficient evidence.
As of this writing in October of 2024, the seemingly random killing of Karoly Varga is still unsolved.
