On September 26th, 1995, twenty-seven-year-old Midlands native Gary Whitehouse was on vacation in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. He was enjoying his holiday with some friends, who had all been drinking at a nightclub called Jellies.
Later that night as the group walked along Lytham Road, a man suddenly leaped out of a car, hit Gary from behind with an object that might have been a baseball bat or a snooker cue, then jumped back in the car and sped off.
Gary was still mobile after the assault, and when the ambulance arrived, he was able to walk to it. He was subsequently taken to Royal Preston Hospital, but he died of his injuries only days later, on September 29th.
Strangely, the attack wasn’t reported to police until thirty-six hours later, reportedly because his friends had been too drunk to remember exactly where the beating had taken place. They were able to tell authorities that the car the assailant had jumped out of was silver or gray, and most likely a Ford Escort.
Investigators were baffled as to what the motive for the crime could have been, speculating that perhaps an inebriated Gary had stumbled in front of the car, enraging the driver. Likewise, the friends who witnessed the beating had no idea what might have triggered it.
As of this writing in December 2024, the seemingly random murder of Gary Whitehouse is still unsolved.
