Fifty-six-year-old mother of three Betty Brown lived in Edinburgh and made her living as a care worker. On May 28th, 2010, she boarded a bus on Nicolson Street, carrying two suitcases. It was believed she was bound for Gretna, where her daughter lived, or to Cumbria. However, she never arrived at her destination.
More than six months later, on January 18th, 2011, Betty’s decomposed remains were discovered near a quarry in a wooded area between Longtown and Gretna. She was partially nude and had likely been sexually assaulted. Two Aldi bags were found near the body.
Police suspected that someone had picked her up in a vehicle after she disembarked from the bus in Cumbria and that this person was probably responsible for her death. Despite a thorough investigation, however, no arrests were ever made.
A fresh appeal for information in the case was made in 2013, but it appears that no new developments have taken place since then, and the murder of Betty Brown is still unsolved.
