Clive Enkel

Fifty-three-year-old Clive Enkel was a quiet, somewhat reclusive man who was nonetheless described as kind and caring by friends and neighbors. He lived in the family home on Alderwood Drive, Abridge, Essex, England, looking after his elderly father.

Shortly before eight p.m. on September 25th, 2008, Clive was watching television in his living room when a gang of men suddenly smashed down the door and rushed inside.

Clive’s father fled out of the back door, but the men chased Clive up the stairs to his bedroom, where they proceeded to beat him mercilessly with baseball bats.

After the attack, two masked men were spotted fleeing the home; a third man was posted as a lookout, while a fourth was behind the wheel of a BMW that the gang used to escape. This stolen vehicle was later found abandoned near a sewage plant.

Clive was rushed to the hospital, but he never regained consciousness, and his life support was turned off two days later after it was determined that he was brain dead.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the gang of killers had likely been the same group of men who had been knocking on doors around the neighborhood, offering to do yard work. Indeed, it seemed that the men had cut a tree down in Clive Enkel’s garden previously, but then had robbed his house and threatened to get him if he reported the crime to police.

Five men were sought in connection with the murder, and the case was later featured on Crimewatch. Despite new leads, the brutal beating death of Clive Enkel is still unsolved as of December 2024.
