Twenty-four-year-old laborer Philip Gray lived alone in Southampton, England. On January 28th, 1997, he was taking a walk in Hoglands Park near his home, where another man was walking his white terrier.
According to witness statements, the dog was barking, and Philip told the dog walker, “Keep that animal away from me.” The dog walker shot back, “You stay away from my dog.” There was then a scuffle, whereby the dog walker stabbed Philip three times in the stomach and chest with a pen knife before fleeing the scene. The witness claimed the killer ran toward a nearby shopping center.
Police believed the murder was an unprovoked attack, as the witness stated that Philip had not approached or harmed the dog.
A thirty-two-year-old man was arrested and charged with the slaying but was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The murder of Philip Gray is still unsolved, more than a quarter century later.
