Joseph Montague

Sixty-four-year-old Joseph Montague was a beloved boxing trainer and promoter in Coventry, England. On the evening of Saturday, June 8th, 2003, he had gone with his friend Neil Simpson to a boxing match at Centre AT7, and after the bout, the two men were planning to go to Neil’s house in Willenhall to watch another boxing match that he had recorded earlier. This was reportedly a weekly tradition for them.

However, on this particular occasion, the program had failed to record, and Joseph decided to pop in to visit his daughter in Foleshill and then head home. Unfortunately, this decision would cost him his life.

Upon returning to his residence on Newdigate Road just after midnight, an unknown gunman shot Joseph in the head before fleeing the scene. It was clear from the outset that the killer had deliberately targeted the victim and had been lying in wait for him to return, but police were baffled as to what the motive for the shooting may have been.

In September of 2004, a twenty-four-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime but was released without charge shortly afterward.

Since that time, there have been no new leads in the case, and the identity of Joseph Montague’s killer remains a mystery.
