John “Pops” Joseph

On May 12th, 2000, a person called the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in South Florida and reported a dead man lying under a tree near the intersection of Dupree Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.

Authorities arrived on the scene and determined that the victim–later identified as sixty-nine-year-old John “Pops” Joseph, a transient who’d been staying in the area—had been murdered. However, the exact cause of death was not specified.

The case quickly went cold at the time, and though a renewed request for information was made in 2021, on the twenty-first anniversary of the slaying, so far there have been no further updates, and the tragic murder of John Joseph is still unsolved.
