On Valentine’s Day of 2000, a man out walking his dog in a field near East 8th Street and West County Road 43 in Greeley, Colorado stumbled across a set of skeletal remains. Forensic examination determined that the body belonged to a white male, aged between thirty-five and fifty, and standing around five-foot-four. He was clad in blue nylon ski pants, black tennis shoes, and blue rubber slip-on boots over the shoes. Although a wallet was found with the remains, the contents were too degraded to identify the individual. Likewise, because of the state of bodily decay, a cause of death could not be determined, though there was no obvious sign of trauma.
Many years passed, and the discovery became relegated to the cold case files under the name John Doe 2000W692. However, in December 2023, the skeleton was tentatively identified through forensic genealogy as Christopher Scott Case, who had previously lived in Rock Springs, Wyoming but was last seen by his half-brother in Nevada in 1998. Potential relatives of the deceased came forward and provided DNA samples, at which point the identification was confirmed.
It remains unclear why Christopher was found in Colorado and what the exact circumstances of his death were. Investigators are still hoping that they will be able to give the victim’s family some closure now that his identity has been established.
