It was April 28th, 2000, and the fiancée of twenty-seven-year-old Kevin Grimmage had just given birth to a baby girl. Kevin had been visiting his partner and child at the hospital but had to leave to run errands. Sadly, he would never see his family again.
Shortly after one a.m., a 911 call came into the Gainesville, Florida police department. Someone on 3rd Avenue reported hearing loud music and a scuffle, then looking out their window to see their neighbor Kevin Grimmage struggling with two other black males on his front lawn. A gunshot rang out, Kevin slumped to the ground, and the two suspects jumped in Kevin’s chameleon-colored 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante and sped away.
By the time help arrived, Kevin had already succumbed to the single bullet wound in his chest.
Some time later, Kevin’s vehicle was found torched about twenty miles away, in Reddick. The stereo, amp, and a set of gold rims had been stolen.
Authorities later attempted to link the crime with two other carjackings that had taken place in the area: one on March 15th, and one on May 5th. In both those cases, however, the owners of the vehicles had not been harmed.
The Grimmage family, including the daughter who was born the same day her father died, are still hoping that they will one day see justice.
