Twenty-eight-year-old Michael Cabey worked in a supermarket and lived in Clapton, east London, England. On Sunday, August 5th, 2001, he was sitting on a wall at the corner of Rossington Street and Northwold Road, chatting to a couple of friends. Suddenly, three men in a Ford Fiesta drove past and opened fire from inside the vehicle.
The car sped off in the direction of Clapton Road, leaving Michael lying on the sidewalk, bleeding from four gunshot wounds. Emergency services arrived and transported him to Homerton Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police were baffled as to the reason for the broad daylight shooting, as Michael Cabey seemingly did not have any enemies or links to illegal activity. Two men were arrested on August 7th in connection with the shooting, but neither was charged.
The murder was investigated in the context of Operation Trident, a task force looking into a number of black-on-black gun crimes in the area. It appears that no link with any previous shooting was found, however.
Authorities were also seeking a well-dressed black woman who had reportedly taken Michael’s phone while he was being helped by concerned members of the public after he was shot. She claimed the phone was hers and left the scene immediately. This woman has never been identified, and her role in the crime, if any, is a mystery.
The vehicle the perpetrators were driving had the registration number R160 ULD and was believed to have been abandoned somewhere in London after the murder, but detectives were unable to track it down.
As of this writing in April of 2025, the motive and the identity of the killers are still unknown.
