Twenty-two-year-old Darren Birt was at a party with friends in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 1st, 2002. At some stage, he reportedly got involved in a minor confrontation among other party guests that spilled out into the street.
Three men began chasing Darren, who ran from Edinburgh Road toward Burnett Road. Eventually, the trio caught up to him and began their attack.
Shortly afterward, the victim was found lying in a pool of blood on the road in Calvay Place, Barlanark, at around one-thirty a.m. He had been brutally stabbed and beaten with a hammer. He was quickly transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, but soon died from his injuries.
Not long after the murder, three men were arrested and questioned, but there was insufficient evidence to charge them with any crime. Police believe these suspects were responsible, but faced challenges with witnesses being unwilling to talk. All the party guests were tracked down and questioned, but no actionable information emerged.
Darren’s father, Brian, wrote a book called The Forgotten Murder in 2018 about his son’s slaying, and authorities made a renewed plea to the public for help in early 2023, but as of this writing in May 2025, the murder of Darren Birt is still unsolved.
