Karen Marchioni

The murder of Karen Marchioni on October 8th, 2001, remains one of Framingham, Massachusetts’s most tragic and enduring unsolved cold cases. The forty-one-year-old mother, known for her big heart, love of animals, and dedication to her young daughter, was brutally stabbed to death in her own home in a daytime attack that has left her family searching for justice for over two decades.

Karen was a Framingham resident who, despite personal struggles including substance abuse and challenging relationships, was remembered by loved ones as fun-loving, compassionate, and fiercely protective of her family. She was a founding member of what would become the MetroWest Humane Society (originally involved with the Framingham Animal Humane Society Shelter), often adopting older cats, caring for strays, and volunteering to help the elderly. Karen adored classic rock, motorcycles, and simple joys like playing at local parks with her only child, Jennifer Case. Just two days before her death, on October 6th, 2001, she celebrated her forty-first birthday with family and friends. Jennifer, then fourteen, gave her mother flowers that day, the last time she saw her alive.

On the morning of October 8th, 2001, shortly after eleven a.m., Karen placed a desperate 911 call from her apartment at 14 Nelson Street in Framingham. In a barely audible voice, she reported that she had been attacked and stabbed. Emergency responders arrived quickly but found a horrific scene: Karen had managed to barricade herself in the bathroom during the assault, where she was discovered unresponsive on the floor in a large pool of blood. She had sustained dozens of stab wounds to her face, neck, and chest.

Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, but despite efforts to save her, Karen succumbed to her injuries about two hours later. She was unable to provide details about her assailant(s) before passing.

The midday timing and location—a residential area—shocked the community, as did the brutality of the crime. Authorities described it as purposeful, with some family members later speculating that more than one person may have been involved, though no definitive evidence has confirmed this publicly.

Framingham Police and the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office launched an immediate investigation. Early on, detectives identified a suspect: Aaron Sutton, a local man with a history of violent offenses. In 2005, police publicly named him as the “prime suspect” in Karen’s murder after he was arrested for kidnapping and attempting to murder his girlfriend, highlighting him as armed and dangerous. An email from Framingham detectives (inadvertently shared in media reports) referenced him in connection to the case, and family members have described him as a lifelong violent felon known in the area.

Despite this, no charges have ever been filed against Sutton or anyone else in relation to Karen’s death. Forensic testing, including efforts as recent as 2019, has been conducted, but results have not led to an arrest. The case remains uncharged and officially unsolved.

The Middlesex DA’s office, including under District Attorney Marian Ryan, has repeatedly stated commitment to the case, noting pursuit of multiple leads, new forensic opportunities unavailable in 2001, and assignment of victim-witness advocates. However, family members have expressed deep frustration over perceived lack of urgency, communication gaps, and the possibility that Karen’s struggles with addiction influenced investigative priority.

Karen’s daughter, Jennifer Case, now an adult working in mental health (inspired partly by her mother’s battles), has spoken publicly about the profound loss. At fourteen, she navigated grief without her mother during key teenage years. Jennifer has shared memories and letters from her mom to humanize her beyond her challenges, insisting, “She was an amazing person and mom… It’s not OK that we don’t have answers.”

Cousin Christine Rogers Pelletier, who grew up like a sister to Karen, remains determined, visiting her grave and pushing authorities. She recalls Karen’s protective nature and a haunting conversation shortly before the murder where Karen asked her to care for Jennifer if anything happened. Both women feel someone knows the truth and that the suspect has continued living freely in the area, committing other violent acts without accountability for this crime.

Sadly, as of this writing in March 2026, the savage murder of Karen Marchioni is still unresolved.
