Kelly Ostroski

Thirty-year-old Kelly Ostroski was as a talented individual with a background in the performing arts; she had been a singer and a ballroom dancer earlier in her life. However, by 2001, she was living in St. Petersburg, Florida, and her life was heavily impacted by crack cocaine addiction, which friends and reports indicated had taken a significant hold over her. This struggle placed her in vulnerable situations and environments often associated with drug use in the area at that time.

Two weeks prior to her murder, on or around September 16th, 2001, Kelly survived a violent sexual assault. According to police accounts, she was pushed to the ground, held at knifepoint, and raped repeatedly by an assailant. She managed to escape the attack despite being partially bound (described in one report as hogtied with a red shoelace from the waist down) and provided a description that included her attacker riding a bicycle.

On September 30th, 2001, Kelly’s body was found in the industrial zone near 46th Street South. She had been shot to death, and authorities determined that her body had been dumped at that location after the killing. Initial reports indicated no immediate suspects.

Police pursued leads connecting the earlier rape to her murder. In November 2001, a man arrested on sexual battery charges (related to the September 16th assault on Kelly) was questioned in connection with her killing. Further developments in early 2002 showed that DNA testing linked a suspect (referred to in reports as Wright) to the sexual assault on the victim, leading to additional charges in that case. However, no public resolution tied any individual conclusively to the murder itself.

More than two decades later, the murder of Kelly Ostroski remains officially unsolved.
