Juan Campos and Leonor Otero

On the evening of September 30th, 2001, between approximately nine thirty-five p.m. and nine fifty p.m., three unknown suspects entered a residence at 14901 Meredith Avenue in Dade City, Florida (Pasco County, north of Tampa). The home invasion quickly turned deadly during what authorities described as a robbery attempt.

Thirty-six-year-old Juan Campos, who was at the residence, was shot and killed. Thirty-two-year-old Leonor Otero, who was inside the house, exited in an apparent attempt to assist Campos. She was then murdered as well. Reports indicate both victims died from gunshot wounds, though one early reference mentioned possible strangulation in the context of the investigation. The suspects fled the scene after the killings.

The attack was swift and violent, leaving little immediate evidence that led to quick arrests. Law enforcement from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office responded and launched an investigation into the double homicide.

Details released publicly are limited. Three unknown male suspects were involved, and the motive appeared tied to robbery.
No arrests have been made, and the case remains open.
