Lauren Eley

Seventeen-year-old Lauren Eley lived in Northampton with her family. At a little before two o’clock on the afternoon of December 11th, 2004, she went to Grosvenor Shopping Centre, reportedly to meet a boyfriend that her parents didn’t know about.

Only a few minutes later, two teenagers in the car park saw a cell phone lying on a ledge, and when they peered over, they saw the splayed form of Lauren Eley lying on the ground below.

Lauren survived the fall, and though police initially believed the incident may have been an accident or an attempted suicide, Lauren repeatedly told the paramedics that she had not jumped. She was taken to Northampton Hospital but died hours later during surgery.

Police arrested the two youths who had found Lauren on suspicion of manslaughter, but they were later released. Lauren’s secret boyfriend was also questioned, but he claimed he had been with another girl and hadn’t seen Lauren at all that day.

While the inquest into the death returned with an open verdict, authorities still suspect that someone may have pushed Lauren off the ledge. Whatever the case, her death remains a mystery more than twenty years later.

  1. I went to Northampton school for girls with Lauren, I remember sitting with her in french lessons. We also started college at the same time and she was doing early years education but i was doing a different course but our lessons were in the same building so we often would say hi passing by. She was the sweetest girl with a very kind heart. Never in a million years would I expect something like this to happen to her. I still think of her sometimes, that theres never been closure on what happened. I don’t believe she jumped.. maybe she did fall by accident, but its such a tragic event.
