The new year of 2005 had barely begun when emergency services were called to Maxilla Walk, Harlesden, northwest London, during the afternoon of Sunday, January 2nd. Upon arrival, they discovered twenty-four-year-old Benjamin Onwuka suffering from a catastrophic gunshot wound to the head.
Paramedics rushed the young man to hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite medical efforts, his injuries proved fatal, and he died a short time later.
The shooting immediately prompted a major murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service, as detectives worked to establish why Benjamin had been targeted and who had pulled the trigger.
From the outset, detectives treated the shooting as a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence. The investigation progressed rapidly enough that four men were summarily arrested in connection with the murder.
However, despite questioning the suspects and continuing the inquiry, investigators were unable to gather sufficient evidence to support criminal charges. All four men were eventually released without prosecution.
Recognizing that someone in the community likely knew what had happened, police sought public assistance. A £10,000 reward was offered for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible. Detectives also encouraged anyone with even seemingly minor information to contact Crimestoppers anonymously. Despite the financial incentive and repeated appeals, though, no breakthrough ever emerged.
During the early 2000s, Harlesden and neighboring parts of northwest London experienced a number of serious firearm incidents linked to criminal rivalries, organized crime, and gang disputes. Although investigators have never publicly confirmed a motive in Benjamin Onwuka’s case, the circumstances—a daylight shooting with an apparent intended victim—led many observers to believe the killing was targeted rather than opportunistic. Police have never publicly disclosed enough evidence to identify a definitive motive, and no official explanation has been established.
Although the investigation remains officially open, no further arrests or charges have been announced, and the murder of Benjamin Onwuka is still unsolved.
