On the evening of Sunday, April 15th, 2007, fifty-four-year-old Alan Sheard was walking along Leeds Road in the Thornbury area of Bradford, England. Before the night was over, he became involved in a confrontation that would prove fatal.
Alan had been drinking and socializing in local pubs before beginning the walk home along Leeds Road, one of Bradford’s major routes linking the city with neighboring communities. According to investigators, the attack occurred at approximately seven p.m. on April 15th.
Police determined that Alan became involved in an argument with a group of Asian youths. During the confrontation, one member of the group allegedly struck him, causing him to fall or otherwise sustain severe injuries. Witnesses later reported seeing the altercation, but the assault unfolded quickly, leaving investigators with only limited information about those responsible.
Emergency services transported Alan to Leeds General Infirmary, where doctors treated him for critical head injuries. Despite medical efforts, he died the following day, April 16th.
West Yorkshire Police launched a major inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Detectives canvassed businesses and residences along Leeds Road, appealed for witnesses, and attempted to identify the group involved in the confrontation.
However, despite public appeals, no suspect was ever publicly identified or charged, and no murder conviction has ever resulted from Alan Sheard’s death.
