Kavian Francis-Hopwood

On April 2nd, 2003, twenty-one-year-old college student Kavian Francis-Hopwood was gunned down in broad daylight on the Stonebridge Estate in Brent, northwest London. The killing, which occurred just after a national gun amnesty had been launched, shocked the local community and highlighted the pervasive issue of gun violence in parts of the borough at the time.

Kavian was shot half a dozen times outside Donovan Court on Exton Crescent at approximately twelve forty p.m. The block of flats, which has since been demolished, overlooked the scene, with an estimated 250 homes potentially having a view of the area. Despite the public nature of the attack in the middle of the day, no witnesses came forward to assist the police investigation.

Kavian, described as a quiet and steady young man with no apparent connection to local gang feuds or the drug-related violence plaguing parts of Brent, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, or targeted for reasons that remain unclear. He was from Dollis Hill and had been studying at college.

The murder took place amid a backdrop of escalating gun crime in Brent between rival groups, such as the Lock City Crew and Mus Love Crew, with territorial disputes, drug debts, and robberies fueling much of the violence. However, Kavian’s killing stood out because he did not appear to be involved in those circles.

Kavian’s mother, Patsy Hopwood-Clarke, has been a tireless campaigner against gun crime. Just months after the murder, she helped establish an annual peace march in Brent (running from 2004 to 2009) and participated in anti-gun initiatives, including marches with other affected families.

Three months after Kavian’s death, his daughter Takiela was born.

Kavian’s murder was one of two high-profile cases in Brent in 2003 that drew widespread outrage, the other being the shooting of seven-year-old Toni-Ann Byfield. Between 1999 and 2003, the borough saw seventeen gun murders and sixty-nine attempted gun murders, prompting the expansion of Operation Trident (focused on black-on-black gun crime).

Kavian Francis-Hopwood’s murder remains unsolved as of June 2026.
