Palestine is a small East Texas city and the county seat of Anderson County, roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston. On Wednesday, July 9th, 2008, an alarming discovery brought law enforcement to the 1600 block of Eilenstein Street.
There, in a wooded area, a young man was found lying dead.
More than two weeks after the body was discovered, East Texas television station KLTV reported that police had released the victim’s identity and cause of death. The deceased man was twenty-three-year-old Ricardo Loaeza, a Palestine local. Autopsy findings established that the victim died from a knife wound.
There is no publicly stated sequence of events explaining how Ricardo came to be in the wooded area. The Texas Rangers’ current case summary does not identify a suspect, describe a possible motive, disclose whether the murder weapon was recovered, or say whether there were witnesses. It also does not indicate whether Ricardo was known to have been with anyone shortly before his death.
The involvement of the Texas Rangers from the beginning indicates that the case was not solely a Palestine Police Department investigation. Within weeks of the killing, police were already appealing for information. KLTV’s July 25th, 2008 report asked anyone who knew something about Ricardo’s death to contact the Palestine Police Department.
As months became years, Ricardo Loaeza’s murder remained unresolved. No suspect has been publicly identified in connection with the murder, and no motive has been publicly established.
The state currently advertises a Texas Crime Stoppers reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Ricardo Loaeza’s murder.
